Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending the opening of an exhibition at Rochfort Art Gallery in Sydney, which showcased the incredible talent of local female artists.
I believe that all experiences I have in my life can directly teach me things about business, people, and the “business of people” which I find myself working in everyday. The exhibition was very inspiring, and as I took in an array of beautiful styles and colours, I found myself bringing it back to recruitment (as I often do).
Everyone looks at things from a different perspective. Everyone in the art gallery had their own favourites, and looked at the pieces from their own physical and mental standpoint that is based on their experiences, values and beliefs.
In the same way, every potential job candidate brings something more to the table beyond their hard skills. They bring new experiences and fresh way of looking at the business, which is unique to everyone else already there.
If you carefully choose employees who align with your business values and goals, their fresh perspective can ignite a positive change and refresh a workplace culture that may have gone stale. So consider each candidate with that in mind.
If you or you business is seeming a little stuck, it might be time for a new way of looking at things. It doesn’t necessarily have to come from new eyes looking at the business. There are other ways to get a new perspective on your business, like:
- Schedule time every week to step back from the daily grind, look at your business from the outside, and examine it holistically.
- Look at what your competitors are doing regularly. Also look at what successful business owners outside of your industry are doing. What can you learn from them?
- Talk to your customers, look at the business from their perspective, understand their needs, get their feedback.
- Talk to your suppliers, what trends can they see in your industry that others can’t?
- Go to networking and business events. Listening to speakers and talking to other business owners stimulate your thinking.
- Research! Read books and newspapers, scan online and follow relevant business sources on social media, take part in a training course. Being wise to the wider business world will help you see your business in a different light.
- Take time off! Your mind will have the opportunity to be creative if you’re doing something completely different for a while. Often the best ideas for your business occur when you are away from your business and have the time to think.
- Get professional support to help you gain a fresh perspective on your business. You could engage a business mentor or consultant, or get expert advice in a particular area.
Hopefully by trying out some of these things, it will expand your horizons and encourage you to develop a fresh perspective on your business that will help you achieve your goals.
